Your life could offer you 3 different happiness

Your life could offer you 3 different happiness

3 different lives

Martin E. P. Seligman - the former chairman of American Psychological Association:(APA) - has stated that we can experience 3 different kinds of happiness in life.

3 different lives

1. Pleasure and gratification

Life concentrating on as much enjoyment and pleasure as you can possibly get. In this type of life you spend most of your time on purchasing products, having good meals, sex and various entertainments.

2. Embodiment of strengths and virtues

Life with activities for which you make the most of your strength and virtues and could totally lose yourself to. Work, love life, parental care, hobbies - whatever it is that you totally forget time and are lost in.

3. Meaning and purpose.

Life where you use signature strengths and virtues in the service of something much larger than you are.

You are involved daily in activities with which you make contribution not just to your family and friends but the society, the region, countries and the whole world.

It has been said that human beings feel as though they are "living as themselves" when they see deeper, broader meaning in the activities they are involved in.

Let me just remind you that there are no good or bad in these 3 kinds of lives. We are just stating here that according to Seligman's research there are 3 kinds of happiness.

If I may add, the research has shown that there is a progression in the level of happiness from the first type of happiness of pleasure/gratification to strengths/virtues and finally meaning/purpose.

From the results shown, meaning/purpose provides the highest level of happiness. Yet, don't you agree that most of us pursue pleasure/gratification most of the time ?

Which is in a way inevitable.

Majority of commercial activities make constant appeal for pleasure/gratification and we are showered with information related to them. As a consequence we ride the wave and end up pursuing pleasure/gratification.

Again, I am not saying this is bad, because if we deny pleasure/gratification, many companies will probably go out of business.

It is OK to pursue pleasure/gratification, however this life style has one big flaw.

That is, with pleasure/gratification, the sense of happiness does not last long.

For example, let's say you have finally purchased an expensive product you had always craved for.

When you have just got it, you may be ecstatic and go "Yay! I finally got it!!" but then, gradually you would get used to having the product over time.

Then relatively, the level of satisfaction - namely the level of happiness - would gradually decrease over time too, therefore you would start pursuing "another product".

You may agree that the first beer you drink in the evening tastes so good, but gradually with the 2nd, 3rd and so on, the joy will decrease - the exact same principle here.

If we keep pursuing pleasure/gratification alone, we will find ourselves trapped in the infinite loop wanting "more, more" in which we feel less happy.

Shawn Achor, the most popular Harvard University lecturer has said:

"We were once raised by our parents and teachers telling us that we will succeed if we work very hard. And if we succeed, we will be happy.

The one problem however, is that this logic is now collapsed.

The logic has been collapsed because the idea itself is regressive.

Sense of happiness, is the presupposition to success".

I completely agree with him here.

I myself have analyzed the law of attraction based on quantum theory and brain science and reached the exact same conclusion.

In other words, isn't everything we have been taught and told completely reverse?

I would assume that many quantum theory researchers, brain scientists and psychologists have been going in their head "wait, isn't everything reverse?" but their ideas don't quite reach people in general like us.

One - they don't quite communicate their ideas, but two - most of us find it very hard to accept such ideas.

It is difficult for us o accept new ideas because we live with certain thought patterns targeting to pursue the life of pleasure/gratification.

In order to feel the enduring happiness, we need to come out of those particular thought patterns.
