Human beings have extremely limited vision

We can't see, and we are not really seeing

When we try to make sure what exactly something can be, we say something like "let me see it with my own eyes". But in fact, we don't actually "see" with our eyes. Our brain does.


Eyes are simply lenses, therefore eyes alone cannot make you see things.


The lights caught on the lenses are recognized on retina, which are then converted into electric signal.


The electric signal is then communicated to visual cortex in the brain where the electric signal is interpreted into certain images.


Quite complicated, however this is the mechanism for "seeing".

Therefore, our brain sees things. To be strictly precise, we see images that are created within our brain.


Unfortunately, our vision within the brain is also quite limited due to the limited capacity of lights that eyes can capture.


I assume you have heard of a word "visible light"? Literally, it refers to the lights that are visible.

Below chart shows different lights with various wavelengths. "Visible light" is in red below and is extremely limited and narrow in scope compared to other types of lights.

As you can see from this chart, the energy from visible light applies to quite a limited scope.



Our brain converts the lights caught on the eyes into images. In other words, our brain cannot see the energy outside the visible light scope.


This tells us that the scope of matters we can capture with our eyes is extremely limited. When we think about the small scope of visible light, it's not too much to say that we really aren't seeing much.


Furthermore, our brain has a filtering function to recognize only the matters we are conscious of.


The filtering function in the brain is called brain-stem reticular activating system and this system immediately judges the information to be either important or unimportant to us and selectively excludes the latter.


This happens because the brain burns 20% of total human energy - although it only weighs approximately 2% of our entire body weight - so the body tries to avoid any unnecessary processes to burn more energy.


Thus much less recognition for unimportant information.


We seem to recognize more signboards on dentists as soon as our tooth starts to ache - this is the function of brain-stem reticular activating system also.


When we consider the limited visible lights captured on our eyes and the filtering function automatically operating in the brain, we can safely say that the reality we see with our eyes and confirm is only an interpretation of the reality within an extremely limited scope of vision.

Very limited scope of lights plus the filtering function of recognizing only the matters our brain is conscious of.


So we can only see an extremely limited scope of things and we even further limit ourselves within that scope.


This reality of "we can't see, and we are not really seeing" has a huge impact on the situations drawn to ourselves.
